About

Regarded as the social heart of Bath for more than two centuries, The Pump Room Restaurants boasts the likes of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Mary Shelley were among its previous patrons.

The Pump Room is a striking neo-classical salon, built in the 1790s with its Corinthian columns, glittering chandeliers and a spa fountain it soon became the destination for high society to meet and ‘take the waters’ from the hot springs.

Today, The Pump Room is an elegant restaurant and a must-try for those visiting Bath. Open daily for delicious Breakfasts and Brunch or Traditional Afternoon Tea with live music by the Pump Room Trio or resident pianist and offers seasonal evening dining regularly throughout the year.

PUMP ROOM AFTERNOON TEA

Enjoy our sumptuous interpretation of the ritual that began in the 1800s, when the 7th Duchess of Bedford found a way to fill the ‘hungry’ gap between lunch and supper. Afternoon Tea is served from 12 noon, Monday to Sunday. The menu features a selection of delicious savoury and sweet treats along with our homemade buttermilk scones.

THE PUMP ROOM TRIO

Founded as the Pump Room Orchestra by Master of Ceremonies Beau Nash in the 1700s, the group is believed to be the longest-established resident ensemble in Europe. The Pump Room Trio or pianist plays every day to add to your enjoyment while dining.

SPA WATER FOUNTAIN

As described in Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey', people have been travelling to The Pump Room for centuries to 'take the waters' for it's believed curvative proporties. Originally treatments involved bathing in the hot waters, then in the late 17th Century drinking spa water also came to be a recognised treatment for certain conditions. Today we use the hot spa water to heat the Roman Baths and Pump Room site in winter. During your visit to The Pump Room, you can try the hot spa water at the fountain. It contains 43 minerals and has a rather unusual taste!

FESTIVE EVENING DINING BY CANDLELIGHT

Join us at the Pump Room for Festive Evening Dining by Candlelight. Enjoy the wonderful sounds of our talented resident pianist while you feast on our delicious three-course menu, including dishes such as our free-range turkey ballotine with apricot stuffing, and braised lamb shoulder with buttered mash.
