  • REOPENING THE BUSINESS OF EVENTS FROM 21 June 2021

    22 April 2021

    WEDDINGS

As of 21 June, more than 30 guests will be able to attend a wedding in England. Any limits on guests will be set by the wedding venue. These limits are based on the current social distancing requirements (i.e. 50 % capacity including people working at the event. Please see a set of requirements listed below). Venues permitted to be open, and licenced to hold civil ceremonies, will need to be able to comply with the current social distancing rules for both the ceremony and reception (seated service only).

Venues must provide table service, however, there is no requirement for tables of six, or even for guests to be on socially distanced tables.

Dancing is advised against due to the increased risk of transmission, except the couple’s ‘first dance’. Any other activities at a reception, including those that involve or are watched by attendees (such as cake-cutting and the playing of games) can take place.

Under Step 3, indoor and outdoor professional performances can take place, including at a ceremony or reception. Although there is no limit on the number of professional performers that can perform at a ceremony or reception, the number should be determined by how many the venue can safely accommodate with social distancing measures in place between the performers and guests. Performances should follow the guidelines as set out in the performing arts guidance.

    BUSINESS EVENTS

Business events such as conferences, trade shows, exhibitions, charity auctions, and private dining events such as charity or gala dinners and awards ceremonies and corporate hospitality can take place as long as they meet COVID-19 secure requirements.

    THE NUMBER OF ATTENDEES

The total number of attendees*) in an event is capped as:

    • For indoor events – 1,000 people or 50% of a venue’s capacity, whichever is lower,
    • For outdoor events – 4,000 people or 50% of a venue’s capacity, whichever is lower.

*) The cap is only for event attendees and event staff or volunteers.

ADHERING TO COVID-SECURE GUIDANCE, INCLUDING SOCIAL CONTACT LIMITS

All events must follow the relevant COVID-19 Secure guidance. Event organisers, attendees and venues must take reasonable steps to limit the risk of transmission, complete a related risk assessment, and adhere to all legal requirements, including social contact limits.

The event attendees should not mix beyond what is permitted by social contact limits, which are set as follows:

    • outdoor hospitality at events is permitted in groups of up to 30 people
    • indoor hospitality at events will be permitted in groups of up to 6 people or with one other household.

    VENUE SET-UP

When setting up a venue for an event, event organisers must ensure that COVID-19 guidance for bars, pubs and takeaways is applied, in particular:

    • tables are spaced out to ensure 2m social distancing or 1m with barriers between tables,
    • attendees are in groups of no more than 6 people or two households and do not mix with any other groups at the event,
    • seating is assigned and carefully controlled to ensure attendees do not mix with any other table, including approaching other tables or sitting at different tables,
    • attendees wear face coverings whenever not seated at their table.

    FOOD AND DRINK AT EVENTS

There is a requirement for food and drink to be consumed at the table. This means:

    • If the venue sells alcohol, then all food and drink must be ordered, served and consumed at a table,
    • where the sale of alcohol is not offered, attendees should be seated when consuming food and drink, but can order and collect food and drink from a counter,
    • Where there is no seating available, food outlets can provide a takeaway or delivery service. Takeaway food and drink cannot be consumed in the outlet or in an adjacent area. Customers should be reminded to adhere to safe social distancing when queuing for food and drink by members of staff, through signage, a one-way queuing system, or by marshals.
