Greyfriars
20 June 2019Greyfriars English Sparkling Wine
Greyfriars is located on the sunny south facing chalk slopes of the Hog’s back at Puttenham, just outside Guildford in Surrey. The original vineyard was planted in 1989 and since taking over in 2010 they have expanded the area under vine to 40 acres on two sites, focusing on producing stunning English sparkling wine. They have also built a brand new winery containing state of the art winemaking equipment and a natural chalk underground cellar for ageing their wine prior to release.
Greyfriars’ vineyards are predominantly planted with the three classic Champagne grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. They are producing a range of spectacular sparkling wines reflecting the unique local soil conditions, climate and heritage of the Surrey North Downs. They also produce several still wines, including a Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Their wines have been extremely well received and have already won many prizes in international competitions, including a Gold Outstanding in the International Wine and Spirit Competition for their 2013 Blanc de Blanc and a Gold for their 2014 Rose Reserve.
Greyfriars’ Non-Vintage Cuvée is a blend of the 2014 and 2015 harvest, predominantly using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it is elegant and fresh with lemon and stone fruits flavours, a subtle toasted notes and hints of brioche.
It is a refreshing aperitif and perfect served with a light fish dish or seafood tempura style food.
