A Very Special Searcys Customer: Christian Lamb, marked her 102nd birthday with a Searcys Cake
4 August 2022In July 2020, we were honoured to have helped celebrate a special birthday for a very special Searcys customer. Christian Lamb, a former WW2 Women’s Royal Naval Veteran who worked on D Day Maps at Churchill’s Secret Offices, marked her 102nd birthday with a Searcys cake. We are incredibly proud to have made her wedding cake during WW2 in 1943 and her 100th birthday cake in 2020.
Christian has shared her story with Jeremy Vine on BBC 2 today. Click the link below to listen!
We were incredibly proud to receive a note from Lamb, who writes: “Anniversaries are quite the fashion these days but I feel very flattered to have a wonderful birthday cake for my 102nd from the famous caterers Searcy’s who had originally made my wedding cake when I was married in London in 1943. At a time when food was in great shortage with so many convoys being sunk I saw this as a Wren officer running a Plotting and Operations room at the height of the Battle of the Atlantic. I also remember the delicious Searcys packed lunches we had at the National Gallery concerts in the Blitz.
You might think Searcys would be too busy with their own 175th, which commemorates the opening of his own confectionary business, which is imminent. I will never forget the surprise of my 100th Birthday cake so generously presented to me in 2020. This was the year before I released my memoir ‘Beyond the Sea’ with a hearty reference to Searcys.
How am I going to find a suitable way of thanking them for their memorable kindness and my almost 80-year association with Searcys? Is there a suitable anniversary present for 175? If so I do not know it. Perhaps Champagne?”
Christian Lamb, an esteemed author, has recently published her new book, a memoir about love, duty and true-life adventure in the shadow of the Second World War. To find our more, please visit http://www.christianlamb.co.uk/
