  • Championing Mental Health in Hospitality: Searcys Hosts Kris Hall from the Burnt Chef Project

    7 October 2024

In the lead-up to World Mental Health Day, we had the privilege of welcoming Kris Hall, the visionary founder of the Burnt Chef Project, to Searcys venue, The Brigade Bar + Kitchen. Together with an insightful panel, Kris shared powerful perspectives on mental health challenges faced by hospitality professionals, while providing practical advice to foster a healthier and more supportive industry.

    About the Burnt Chef Project

Established in 2019, the Burnt Chef Project is dedicated to eradicating the stigma surrounding mental health in hospitality. Since its launch, it has shed critical light on the unique pressures of our industry, advocating for a culture of openness, empathy, and support. We are so grateful to everyone who attended and contributed to this important discussion. Together, we can eliminate the stigma, creating a healthier and more supported team.

Our Commitment to Wellbeing at Searcys

At Searcys, we believe that the wellbeing of our people is the cornerstone of our success. Our approach to employee wellbeing is holistic, encompassing both mental and physical health. We are committed to providing our teams with the tools, resources, and support systems they need to thrive, both at work and in their personal lives.

    Health and Wellbeing Support

Recognising that mental and physical health are closely connected, we offer comprehensive healthcare benefits, including the Aviva DigiCare program. This service provides digital GP consultations, health assessments, and mental health support for employees and their families. We also promote physical fitness with generous discounts at top UK health clubs and gyms, alongside eco-friendly commuting options through our Cycle to Work scheme.

    Mental Health Support

Our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) offers round-the-clock, confidential support for both personal and professional challenges. In addition, our iBelong app provides employees with a wealth of wellbeing resources. To ensure a healthy work-life balance, we have introduced enhanced leave policies and flexible working arrangements, giving our teams the space they need to rest and recharge.

A key part of our mental health strategy is the training of Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs), who play an essential role in providing support across our venues. These individuals receive ongoing training and are advocates for mental health awareness within Searcys, ensuring that our teams feel supported every day.

    Building a Culture of Wellbeing

Mental health is not a one-off initiative at Searcys; it is integrated into the fabric of our daily operations. Through open communication channels, regular updates, and inclusive feedback opportunities, we maintain a constant focus on mental health. A dedicated wellbeing communication channel gives employees direct access to MHFAs, ensuring immediate support when needed.

Beyond individual support, we nurture a sense of community through a vibrant calendar of wellbeing activities. From chair yoga sessions and dry January awareness campaigns to fun team challenges like step competitions, we aim to build an inclusive culture where everyone feels encouraged and uplifted.

    Looking Ahead

At Searcys, our journey to improve mental health support is ongoing and collaborative. By championing mental health awareness and fostering an environment of compassion, we aim to empower our team members to flourish both personally and professionally. Together, we are committed to creating a resilient, supportive workplace where every individual can thrive.
